William J. Georgitis ’42

William J. Georgitis ’42 died May 19, 2013, at Seal Rock Nursing Facility in Saco. He was born in Hartford, Conn., on January 3, 1921, and graduated from Bristol (Conn.) High School. A member of Zeta Psi fraternity, he graduated cum laude from Bowdoin, a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1949 and pursued advanced studies at Ohio State University. He served in the Navy during World War II as a lieutenant junior grade and executive officer on PT-546 “Timber Wolf” in the Treasury Islands, Soloman Sea, South Pacific. He worked as a chemist at Dennison Paper Co. and taught at schools in Sanford and Bucksport before starting a thirty-year career in the chemistry department at University of Maine–Orono in 1956. He retired in 1986. He is survived by sons Dr. James W. Georgitis ’68, Dr. William J. Georgitis ’69, Dr. John W. Georgitis ’72, Robert Georgitis, and Stuart Georgitis, Ph.D.; sixteen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was predeceased in 2002 by his wife of fifty-nine years, Mary Helen Wyman Georgitis, and his grandson Jeremy.
