HOLDEN — Stephen J. Packard, 85, of Fairchild Drive, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, January 10, 2013.

His wife of thirty-two years, Sandra A. (Jacobson) Packard, died in September of 2012.

He is survived by three sons, Stephen J. Packard, Jr., of Malden, Richard F. McElhiney, Jr., of South Yarmouth, and Sean M. McElhiney of Richmond, N.H.; a daughter, Sandra Lee Vitale of Wall, N.J.; a nephew, Mark Rayworth of Hubbardston; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, T-Willy. He was predeceased by two brothers, David and Samuel Packard.

Stephen was born in Boston, the son of Donald K. and Beatrice (Joy) Packard. He graduated from St. Paul Preparatory School, Concord, in 1945 and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Bowdoin College in 1951, where he was a five-letter athlete.

Stephen worked for many years at Chapman, Fletcher-Peterson Insurance Agency as an insurance broker before retiring.

He enjoyed sailing, boating, traveling to Nantucket, and spending time at his barn in New Ipswich, N.H. He was an avid animal lover and sports enthusiast who especially enjoyed hockey.
