William S. Coperthwaite Jr. ’53

William S. Coperthwaite Jr. ’53, who reconceptualized the ancient Mongolian yurt and started a movement in simple, self-sufficient living, died November 26, 2013, in a car accident in Washington, Maine. He discovered the yurt in a 1962 National Geographic and was taken with its utilitarian design. He built his first yurt—a simple, round structure with a birch-bark roof—at Buck’s Harbor in 1964 and went on to build more than 300 worldwide over the course of his life. Continue reading →

James H. Sibson ’50 died November 21, 2013, in Buzzards Bay, Mass. He was born on September 26, 1926, in Framingham, Mass., and prepared for college at Framingham High School. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and became a scout observer in China during World War II. Richard J. McCarthy ’51 died November 20, 2013, in Salem, Mass. He was born in Melrose, Mass., on October 12, 1923, and prepared for college at Malden (Mass.) High School and Dean Academy. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed for three years in Hawaii. Roger E. Conklin ’51 died November 17, 2013, at his home in Thomasville, Ga. He was born in High Point, N.C., on March 18, 1926, and prepared for college at Curtis High School and the Peddie School. Paul W. Hurd II ’71

Paul W. Hurd II ’71, a longtime teacher and former head of the Hyde School in Bath, died in a car accident November 13, 2013, in Bath. He was born on December 16, 1947, in Bath and prepared for college at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Va.; Lincoln Academy, Morse High School, and Hyde School, where in 1966, he was the first student to enroll.
