Edward B. Hayes ’78 died of a heart attack May 9, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico, grew up in Mexico, Iraq, Switzerland, Colombia, and the United States, and prepared for college at Phillips Academy Andover. At Bowdoin, where he was a dean’s list student and a James Bowdoin Scholar, he helped start the Saltwater College, a series of events designed to heighten the awareness of the ocean, encourage use of the sea in a various disciplines, and to stimulate interest in the marine environment.
